Memorial contributions may be made to Kit Carson County Memorial Hospital and left at Bank of the West, P.O. Box 518, Burlington, CO 80807.Donald Arthur Caldwell, the son of James Maxwell Caldwell and Erma (Nye) Caldwell, was born on Feb. 16, 1932, in Goodland, Kan. at Boothroy Memorial Hospital.

Don attended school in Goodland and in 1952 he was drafted into the Army. He served in the Korean war from 1952 through 1954. He married his high school sweetheart, Jeanne Mae Hayden, on Sept. 7, 1952.

After serving in the Army, Don and Jeanne moved to Burlington where they managed Caldwell's, Inc., an appliance and furniture store, from 1954 to 1995. In 1955 they also established Western Fertilizer Co. and operated it for forty years. Don and Jeanne enjoyed family trips to Hawaii and summers boating at Bonny Dam. In his retirement, Don ("Chopper") enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson and sharing the passion with family and friends. Many good times were had at his shop after poker runs!

So special to Don were his two daughters, Debra Alexander and Dawn Ann Schlosser, his four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren: Lani Carwin and her daughter Lexi; Don Michael Alexander, his wife Lauren, and daughter Hayden; Dani Weibel, her husband Todd, and son Bo and daughter Avery; Levi Schlosser, his wife Valerie, and sons Barrett and Brody.

As Don would say, "It has been a great ride!" Published in The Burlington Record on Aug. 30, 2018
